Over the last 10 weeks I have learned so much about fueling my body for performance. I never realized how little I was eating before I started logging. I also always thought that carbs were bad and would make me gain fat. I learned that an athlete like me needs to take in a lot of calories everyday in order to perform at my full potential. At first I thought that there was no way that eating 200g of carbs, 170g of protein & 75g of fat a day could possibly help me perform better while also burning fat. I have been working out at Joust for about 18 months and I love it. I was definitely getting stronger and feeling better but I knew there was something missing. The 10 week nutrition program that Melissa ran was incredibly helpful. I must admit that I don’t have the greatest eating habits and probably never will. But, some basic knowledge on nutrition, better understanding what to eat before/after workouts, and getting individualized advice has made a difference. The goals of everyone in the group were quite varied. Melissa was able to provide general information to the whole group but also specific advice to each of us, crafted to help us meet our personal goals. Since I started CrossFit over a year ago, my fitness goals have gradually shifted from looking at exercise as a way to “tone problem areas” (whatever that means) to approaching it as a means of training to become a faster, stronger athlete. Even so, when I first started the Fuel for Performance challenge, eating to get fit was an odd concept. I was always taught that you get fit in the gym but lose weight in the kitchen, like these are two separate spheres that somehow don’t overlap. Working with Melissa in the Fuel for Performance challenge for the past three months has given me the support, guidance, and information that I’ve been looking for to help me reach my goals.

Even though I had always been careful about what I ate before beginning this challenge, when the majority of your nutrition knowledge comes from the internet, it doesn’t matter how “careful” you are—you simply don’t have the information to know what to be careful about. After tweaking my diet according to Melissa’s suggestions, the performance changes came within weeks. Honestly, I chalked up those first few PRs to coincidence, to the fact that I would naturally be getting stronger simply because time was passing and I was working hard. But when I realized that my numbers were going up and times going down at a way quicker rate than they ever were before, I had to admit it was more than just a placebo effect.

Besides just an improvement in performance, there have been changes in how I feel. I have finally found the perfect balance between underfeeding and overfeeding. I get enough calories during the day that I’m not so famished come 9:00pm that I crave peanut butter—like, by the jar, not the spoonful. Having numbers to work with (so many grams of carbs, protein, and fat) and the freedom to fill them with what I want really helped me with being consistent. There is no reason to “go off” this way of eating like you would “go on” and “go off” a diet that forbids certain foods. I can stay on track on the weekends or have a nice dinner with my husband without everything derailing. This is a sustainable way of eating that keeps me full so I feel strong enough to go hard at the gym but light enough to not walk around bloated all day.

Being able to work closely with Melissa over the past few months was a definite key to success. She eased me into this new way of eating instead of asking me to pretty much double my protein intake overnight. Once we found an individual program that worked, things were pretty hands-off, but she never left me hanging. She offered guidance throughout the program, emphasizing that this wasn’t going to be a quick fix, offering specific suggestions on how to improve, and encouraging when progress was coming slower than I’d like. She recognized that what worked for someone else wouldn’t necessarily work for me, so she never pushed me to weigh myself and she never compared my progress or diet to anyone else’s. Melissa worked with me again to tweak things when I got injured halfway through and wasn’t able to WOD for a week, which showcases how crucial the longer length of this program is: as opposed to the more common 30-day challenge, 10 weeks gives enough time for life to happen, and Melissa is there to work through it with you.

Ok, so I feel way better blah blah blah…but what about weight lost and pounds lifted? That’s the reason we all read these things. So here’s the data. As I’ve alluded to, I have an aversion to weighing myself, but I did it anyway because writing this is a special occasion. It looks like I’ve lost a grand total of five pounds—but with that five pounds came off seven and a half inches, which indicates that muscle has gone way up. When I squat and press now I feel muscles engage that I didn’t have a few months ago. And my numbers reflect that: my CrossFit Total went up by thirty pounds and my Olympic lifts by fifteen pounds each.

We all love quantifying things, and it’s great that my hard work and commitment is reflected in some real numbers. But what can’t be quantified is how fantastic I feel when I eat like this and how excited I am for the results that will keep coming as I continue to fuel for performance. I know I still have a long way to go, but with the guidance and information provided in this program, I feel equipped to succeed.
